According to our Trauma Registry :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Falls is <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>leading cause<\/strong> of injury in New Brunswick<\/li>\n<li>Every year, <strong>over 1000 people<\/strong> are seen in an Emergency Department after a fall due to icy surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>There has been <strong>a 40% increase<\/strong> in the number of hospital visits due to slips and falls on ice since 2014.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The good news is that simple steps can be taken to reduce your risk of falls, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoiding carrying heavy loads which may cause you to lose your balance<\/li>\n<li>Wearing boots with a thick, non-slip tread to help maintain your footing on slippery surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>Using appropriate walking aids as needed<\/li>\n<li>Following the advice from the experts &#8211; <a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Walk-Like-a-Penguin-English-Poster-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WALK LIKE A PENGUIN!<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The penguin is one animal that has mastered the winter walk.
